Understanding Tenor’s AI assistant, Supervision Mode
Therapy often presents complex challenges where an outside perspective can be invaluable. That's why added Supervision Mode to our Clinical Assistant. Tenor is a 100% HIPAA-compliant AI assistant that serves as an interactive thought partner whenever you need one, now with an optional conversational, supervisor-like dialogue option.
Supervision Mode allows you to chat with Tenor, in a back-and-forth dialogue style conversation to process sessions, with an AI-powered supervisor like chatbot, trained on real evidence-based supervision frameworks.
In this article, you’ll learn how to use the Supervision Mode. To learn more about the Clinical Assistant click here.
What can Supervision Mode do?
Real-time consultation
Whether you just wrapped up a session, are prepping for supervision, or are an experienced supervisor who needs to process something clinical, Supervision Mode is always in your pocket.
Always on call – Process through thoughts and feelings, stuck points, and get supervisor-like feedback about any case, or session 24/7.
Alternative viewpoints – Receive evidence-based interpretations and perspectives when you feel stuck.
Second set of eyes – Supervision Mode serves as a space to engage in back and forth dialogue about cases, allowing for processing and extra perspectives.
And because we automatically save each chat when you exit, you can revisit the conversation at any time — so any wisdom or reflections are never lost and your processing can go deeper with each chat.
What are differences between the Clinical Assistant and Supervision Mode?
The clinical assistant is best for tangible, tactile feedback and support (think generating interventions, finding research, etc.) while Supervision Mode will be a dialogue prompting you to reflect on the process. Here are some common use cases:
Use the Clinical Assistant when you want to… | Sample questions | Use Supervision Mode when you want to… | Sample questions |
Generate interventions or treatment ideas | “Create a CBT intervention for this client focused on reframing negative self-talk.” | Explore what you might have missed in a session | “I’m feeling stuck with this client. What am I missing?” |
Prep agendas or find research | “Generate an agenda for a 45 minute goal-setting workshop.” | Process feelings, countertransference, or uncertainty | “I feel like I completely flopped in this session. What could I do better?” |
Summarize sessions or draft documentation | “I need a treatment summary letter to share with this client’s school.” | Reflect on clinical decision-making | “I need space to process this session.” |
Check diagnostics or create measurable goals | “Write an IFS-focused treatment plan for this client.” | Examine use of self, stuck points, or biases | “Help me build awareness around my bias.” |
Limitations of Supervision Mode
As the therapist, you are always responsible for your client's best interests and needs. Please remember the following limitations of Supervision Mode:
Legal / supervisory guidance – Supervision Mode is to be used as a compliment to supervision, and does not replace consultation with licensed supervisors, attorneys, or ethics boards.
Clinical judgment – The conversational chatbot supplies questions and reflection suggestions, but only you can synthesize the full client history and clinical context.
Non-verbal insight – Because Tenor relies on text transcripts, it may miss tone, body language, and other non-verbal cues you observed in the room.
Crisis response – During crises, mandated-reporting situations, or any safety concerns, follow agency protocols and seek live supervision or emergency resources.
